24M Technologies has announced that it has expanded its portfolio of Eternalyte electrolytes that significantly improve charge rate and cold temperature performance of today’s batteries. Initially unveiled in February 2024 and designed for lithium metal batteries, the new enhanced offering is ideal for silicon and graphite-based batteries used in applications that require high power and low temperature performance with outstanding rapid charge rates and longevity.
24M’s Eternalyte is a revolutionary new electrolyte that delivers high rate capability and can be seamlessly integrated into existing manufacturing processes to enhance battery performance and achieve superior safety. This new breakthrough technology offers immediate improvements for a variety of applications, especially electric vehicles and consumer electronics where consumers demand a peak combination of performance and value.
Key benefits include:
- Fast Charge Rates – Low overpotential and high voltage stability enable industry-leading fast charge rates that would allow a typical EV to add around 200 miles of range in under four minutes (charging from SOC 15% to 80%).
- High Rate Capability – With up to three times the ionic conductivity (~26mS/cm at 25°C,~0.6 Li+ transference number) of standard electrolytes, Eternalyte significantly increases rate performance without impacting energy density regardless of the chemistry.
- Low Temperature Performance – High ionic conductivity preserves battery performance at extremely low temperatures. When comparing individual cells, Eternalyte cells retain over 80% of their capacity at 1C rate and a cell temperature of -20°C, while cells with conventional electrolytes generally lose more than 80% of their capacity. This means that EVs with Eternalyte will have little to no range reduction in cold weather as compared to EVs using today’s electrolytes that can lose 20-30% or more of their capacity in cold weather.
- Easy Implementation – The Eternalyte viscosity is compatible with conventional manufacturing equipment enabling seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes.
- Enhanced Safety – Exhibits strong performance with Li-metal cells and other chemistries in USABC and other abuse tests.
“Originally designed for lithium metal batteries, we quickly realized that the transformative nature of Eternalyte has far-reaching benefits for all types of batteries,” said Naoki Ota, 24M CEO. “We are excited to introduce the expanded Eternalyte family, one of the few chemistry innovations that can be implemented immediately to radically improve performance of today’s batteries.”
In addition, when used with 24M's Impervio separator, Eternalyte delivers even stronger safety benefits and significant performance enhancements. Lithium dendrites (plating) grow faster during rapid or low temperature charging, reducing capacity and power and introducing significant safety risks. An Eternalyte and Impervio combination overcomes these challenges with much higher ion transfer rates, dramatically reducing dendrite formation and preventing them from causing a thermal runaway event or fire. This improves overall battery safety and reduces the likelihood of product or vehicle recalls due to internal short circuits even when utilizing high energy density chemistries.
Ota added, “At 24M, we continue to innovate and offer the battery industry and end users the most advanced battery technologies available. Now, with the combination of Eternalyte and Impervio, we improve the safety and performance of batteries, enhance consumer experiences and open new markets for electrically powered products.”
