Winding type capacitors, also known as wound or rolled capacitors, are constructed by winding two strips of conductive material, separated by a dielectric material, into a cylindrical or oval shape. This construction method is utilized in various capacitor types, such as film capacitors, aluminum electrolytic capacitors, and certain paper capacitors.

Construction of Winding Type Capacitor

Structure of Winding Type CapacitorThe construction of a winding type capacitor includes winding of two or more films/electrodes on a mandrel to a predetermined number of turns, length, or capacitance value. The electrodes are either metalized electrodes or discrete foil electrodes. Metalized electrode capacitors offer higher volumetric efficiency and self-healing properties compared to foil electrodes. Wound capacitors can be fabricated using flexible alkali-free glass films, exhibiting high energy density, temperature stability, and breakdown strength.

The manufacturing process of wound capacitors involves winding the film and foil layers onto a mandrel, removing the mandrel, applying heat to shrink the dielectric and secure the winding, attaching terminals to the wound capacitor body and finally coating the capacitor for protection.

Winding type capacitors offer low equivalent series resistance (ESR) for high power density. They are widely used in consumer electronics, power grids, telecommunications, green energy, and automotive applications. These capacitors are a cost-effective alternative to batteries in many applications requiring high power density and long cycle life.
