ABLIC Introduces Voltage Regulators For Automotive Applications

ABLIC Inc. has launched the S-19218 Series, a range of fast transient response voltage regulators for automotive applications. The S-19218 Series, developed using high-withstand voltage CMOS process technology, is a positive voltage regulator with a high-withstand voltage, low current consumption and high-accuracy output voltage.

The S-19218 Series operates at the maximum operation voltage of 36 V and has a built-in low on-resistance output transistor, which provides a very small dropout voltage and a large output current. In addition, favorable transient response characteristics ensure stable output voltage even if the power supply voltage should be impacted by transient fluctuations.

The regulator can be combined with a 0.1 μF low-capacity input capacitor. The lineup has also been extended to include a model where the output voltage can be set using an external resistor in addition to the model where it is set inside the IC.

A built-in overcurrent protection circuit to limit overcurrent of the output transistor and a built-in thermal shutdown circuit to limit heat are also included.

Features of S-19218 Series:

  • Excellent transient response

A power supply IC for an automotive device is connected to the IG (ignition) power supply and must provide stable power with excellent transient response even under drastic load and voltage fluctuations.

S-19218 Series responds to this need.

  • Input transient response:
    • About 1.5 times (When VIN = 6.0V→13.5V)
    • About 2.0 times (When VIN = 13.5V→6.0V)
  • Load transient response:
    • About 1.3 times (When IOUT = 1mA→100mA)
    • About 2.0 times (When IOUT = 100mA→1mA)
  • Compatible with small I / O capacitors

From a current and transient response standpoint, power supply ICs using a bipolar process are often connected to an IG (ignition) power supply. However, the large external capacitors they require are a significant disadvantage.

S-19218 Series permits use of 0.1μF input capacitors and 1.0μF output capacitors.

Since easily available small capacitors can be used instead of high-capacity capacitors, both device footprints and costs can be reduced.

  • Achieves both heat countermeasures and smaller footprint

S-19218 Series is housed in a TO-252-5S(A) package, which is mounting compatible with the industry standard TO-252-5 package.

The TO-252-5S(A) is a small package that occupies about 35% less board space than the TO-252-5 and is only about half as thick while providing the same level of heat dissipation.

Under certain operating conditions, S-19218 Series can be substituted for a DC-DC converter to substantially shrink device footprints.

Applications:

  • Constant-voltage power supply for electrical application for vehicle interior
  • Constant-voltage power supply for home electric appliance
  • For automotive use (engine, transmission, suspension, ABS, related devices for EV / HEV / PHEV, etc.
