NXP Collaborates with Delta Electronics to Develop Next Generation Electric Vehicle Platforms

NXP Semiconductors announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Delta Electronics to jointly develop traction inverter and power conversion platforms for next-generation electric vehicles. Delta, a global provider of power and thermal management solutions, will leverage NXP’s portfolio of automotive technologies and its longstanding expertise in functional safety and security to enable architectural innovation and platforms for vehicle electrification. In addition, NXP and Delta have unveiled a joint laboratory focused on accelerating electrification offerings and the development of real-time applications based on NXP’s S32Z and S32E real-time processors, and S32K39 microcontroller for safety processing, domain, and zonal control, EV control, and smart actuation.

Along with the innovation in vehicle architecture, advanced driving assistance, and the expansion of software-defined vehicles, Electrification is one of the key innovation drivers of the automotive industry. The adoption rate of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow spurred by consumer interest and encouraged by supportive policies and government legislation that set ambitious zero-emission targets to reduce pollution levels and dependence on imported fuel.

Despite the widespread enthusiasm for electrification, there are fundamental barriers to widespread EV adoption that include high battery production costs, limited driving range, and lengthy charging times. NXP’s S32 Automotive Platform along with NXP’s electrification portfolio aims to reduce these technical barriers, enabling OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to address these challenges.

NXP will leverage the technological advantages of its S32 Automotive Platform and well-established and extensive partner ecosystem to provide Delta with technical support and training. As such, Delta intends to produce automotive platforms and solutions based on NXP’s products and technologies. The collaboration scope is mainly in Delta’s traction inverter and power conversion platforms based on NXP’s functionally-safe solution combining the S32K39 automotive MCU family, FS26 safe system basis chip, and GD3162 isolated gate driver IC.
