Allegro MicroSystems Announces ASIL C Safety Rated Field Current Sensor for EV Powertrain Systems

Allegro MicroSystems has announced the release of samples for the ACS37601, an ASIL C safety-rated, high-precision, field current sensor. Featuring excellent accuracy, the new sensor addresses the requirements of traction and auxiliary inverter systems, as well as battery management systems (BMS) in electric vehicles (EVs).

As a result of the increased Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) regulations, designers of inverter and battery management systems are under pressure to meet greater safety targets.

Allegro has developed the ACS37601 programmable linear Hall-effect current sensor IC with integrated overcurrent, overtemperature, and self-test features to enable clients to meet these new safety criteria while enhancing system effectiveness and extending battery life. The ACS37601 is Allegro’s highest-precision field current sensor for applications demanding measurement capability of more than 200 Amperes. It was created to deliver high accuracy and resolution without sacrificing bandwidth.

The ACS37601 is the first ASIL C-rated field current sensor that can be used with a C-core achieving 0.8% sensitivity error and less than 5 mV offset error over the automotive temperature range. This IC is perfect for battery management applications because it has 30% less noise than legacy devices. The huge operational bandwidth from DC to 240 kHz and the fast 2 μs response time enable new performance in high-frequency automotive inverter applications and DC battery charging. The ACS37601 is compatible with 5 V or 3.3 V power supplies, enabling the adoption of the most cutting-edge microprocessors without the need for extra components.

Samples of the ACS37601 are already available in an extremely thin (1 mm-thick), 4-pin single in-line package (SIP), known as the KT package, to assist designers in delivering the most cutting-edge ASIL-compliant battery management and inverter systems. The KT package allows for surface-mount assembly and has a high tolerance for mechanical vibrations. It is available with straight leads (suffix TN) as well as a lead-formed version (suffix TH).
