Pulsiv Limited will soon launch a range of reference designs and completed modules for USB-C applications with an average efficiency above 95%. This innovative accomplishment, which reduces energy waste in all circumstances, was created in partnership with GaN industry leader, Innoscience, and magnetic specialist, Frenetic.
Designs for a new class of sustainable USB-C chargers, converters, and in-wall plugs will be deployed gradually in 2024. The initial 65 W solution is anticipated to be revealed by late March 2024.
The design’s front-end uses Pulsiv OSMIUM technology to efficiently handle the AC to DC conversion process without inrush current and without input voltage derating. This patented method utilizes an intelligent active valley fill strategy, allowing for the utilization of lesser system components in comparison to traditional designs.
The 65 W model features a DC-DC converter that utilizes an industry standard QR flyback. By integrating a Pulsiv OSMIUM front-end design with optimized magnetics from Frenetic, it enables the utilization of an EQ20 core, resulting in a 20% decrease in the size of the flyback transformer. Utilizing GaN components from Innoscience has decreased losses by reducing RDS(ON) and minimizing parasitic capacitance, while also optimizing the total Bill of Materials cost.
Pulsiv showcases innovation via the creation of cost-effective, energy-efficient, and sustainable power electronics designs that enhance billions of devices. Three choices will be provided to expedite and streamline the design process:
- Complete reference designs will be made available on the Pulsiv website where engineers can download a document package that includes a datasheet, schematic, bill of materials, and EMC test data.
- Fully assembled, ultra-compact, and EMC-compliant finished modules will be produced by Pulsiv to demonstrate a size-optimized design and enable rapid prototyping of each reference design. They can also be easily integrated into end products without incurring any further design, development, or manufacturing costs.
Evaluation boards will be developed for customers who wish to test and/or adapt the design for their own requirements and will be stocked by a number of distribution partners. A datasheet with schematic, bill of materials, EMC test data, Gerbers, and PCB layout files will also be available.
