OmniOn Power Introduces VoltScaler to Meet Growing 5G Power Demands

As the rollout of 5G networks accelerates worldwide, telecom companies are facing significant infrastructure challenges—particularly the increased power needs of 5G radios at macro cell sites. In response, OmniOn Power has introduced its new VoltScaler system, a cutting-edge voltage boost solution designed to ensure reliable power delivery for 5G radios while helping service providers cut costs.

Powering 5G Radios Efficiently

5G remote radio heads (RRHs), located at the top of cell towers, consume nearly 60% more power than their 4G counterparts. This has led to concerns about voltage drops and the cost of upgrading power cables to handle the increased load. OmniOn’s VoltScaler offers a more efficient and cost-effective solution by boosting voltage levels to compensate for the drop in power that occurs as electricity travels up the tower.

VoltScaler increases nominal -48V DC power up to -73V DC, ensuring that the voltage remains stable as it reaches the top of the tower. “The increased power demand from 5G radios can create significant voltage drop challenges, which can affect the performance of the network,” explained Raj Radjassamy, Director of 5G and Wireless Segment at OmniOn Power. “VoltScaler mitigates this issue by boosting voltage, ensuring the RRHs receive consistent power.”

Designed for Efficiency and Flexibility

VoltScaler is designed to deliver high power density and flexibility. It integrates three converter modules, each with three individually operated circuits, supporting up to nine RRHs simultaneously. This configuration allows providers to meet varying power requirements without the need for costly infrastructure upgrades. Each converter circuit can supply 2,708 watts, and the system operates at up to 97% efficiency—significantly reducing operational expenses (OpEx).

Telecom companies can now reuse existing power cabling at upgraded cell sites, avoiding the need for expensive cable replacements. In addition, new tower installations can use smaller, more affordable power cables, further reducing capital expenditure (CapEx).

Simplified Installation and Operation

VoltScaler offers advanced features that simplify installation and ongoing maintenance. Each output is connectorized for tool-free setup, and the system includes integrated circuit protection, eliminating the need for external breakers. The system also allows for remote monitoring and control, providing flexibility for operators to adjust power distribution based on real-time network demands.

In the event of a circuit failure, the system's bypass functionality ensures continuous power to the RRHs, enhancing reliability. Available in both 1RU and 2RU rack-mount systems, VoltScaler can be deployed in a variety of configurations, depending on a customer’s specific power requirements.

Future-Proofing 5G Networks

OmniOn Power’s VoltScaler is a significant step toward addressing the power challenges of 5G networks. By boosting voltage efficiently and reducing both CapEx and OpEx, VoltScaler positions telecom providers to scale up their 5G deployments without overhauling existing infrastructure. With 5G expected to drive unprecedented demand in wireless connectivity, solutions like VoltScaler will play a key role in the long-term success of network providers.
