 Innoscience Unveils High Side Battery Management Solution for Portable Charging Stations

Innoscience has introduced a new generation of battery management system (BMS) solutions with VGaN technology. The heightened desire for convenient, eco-friendly travel, mobile energy storage, and compact power solutions has spurred swift market advancements. 

Advancements in battery protection system (BMS) technology are essential for enhancing battery safety and efficiency. GaN technology facilitates this by augmenting efficiency, power density, and thermal performance, hence enhancing the overall conversion efficiency of power systems. Due to the absence of a parasitic body diode and the capability for bidirectional control, a single bi-directional (VGaN) device from Innoscience can efficiently substitute two conventional MOS Silicon pairs. Innoscience’s VGaN series offers these benefits for Over Voltage Protection (OVP) and Battery Management System (BMS) applications.

The 48V/180A BMS demonstration represents the newest design solution from Innoscience to facilitate a high-side same-port BMS application. This design utilizes Innoscience’s latest 100 V VGaN product, the INV100FQ030A, encapsulated in a 4mm x 6mm² FCQFN package, featuring a maximum on-resistance of 3.2mΩ. A heat sink is unnecessary if the maximum temperature increase is below 50°C. The 16-string battery protection system for charging and discharging employs the controlled bidirectional conduction and cutoff capabilities of VGaN, facilitating four operational states: normal charging and discharging, charging protection, discharging protection, and sleep mode.

According to Innoscience, utilizing only 16 VGaNs can substitute 18 pairs of Silicon MOSFETs (totaling 36), so considerably diminishing both the board size and system loop impedance. This optimization improves performance, decreases system size, and lowers total system cost, rendering it a more efficient and economical choice for battery protection systems. Innoscience’s 48V/180A high-side BMS system is optimal for residential batteries, portable charging stations, e-scooters, and e-bikes, enhancing battery longevity and safety via effective charge and discharge regulation. It mitigates temperature escalation and system expenses while guaranteeing a compact, portable configuration.
