MPS Unveils Advanced Monolithic Power Management Solution for SSDs

Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) has introduced the MP5516, an advanced monolithic power management solution designed to optimize energy storage and release in enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs). Featuring a bidirectional buck-boost converter and an input current limit (ILIMIT_E-FUSE) switch, the MP5516 enhances power efficiency and reliability in critical storage applications.

Key Features of MP5516

The MP5516 integrates cutting-edge energy management capabilities with a range of configurable parameters to ensure seamless operation during power fluctuations. Some of the key features include:

  • Input Current Limit (ILIMIT_E-FUSE) Switch:
    • Operates within a 2.65 V to 16 V input voltage range, making it suitable for various SSD power environments.
    • A 20 mΩ RDS(ON) MOSFET provides efficient energy conduction and protection.
    • Configurable current limits from 1.2A to 6A, with support for 3.3 V, 5 V, or 12 V over-voltage protection (OVP).
    • Built-in reverse-current blocking, preventing stored backup energy from leaking back to the power source.
    • Programmable soft-start and start-up delay times, ensuring smooth power-up transitions.
  • High-Efficiency Charge and Backup Converter:
    • Supports a storage voltage of up to 36 V, with low RDS(ON) values of 60 mΩ/37 mΩ for optimized power management.
    • Provides configurable boost charge current, allowing controlled energy storage ramp-up.
    • Seamless transition between boost charge mode and buck release mode, ensuring uninterrupted power delivery during outages.
    • Constant On-Time (COT) control, reducing voltage dips and ensuring steady-state operation.
  • Smart System Control and Monitoring:
    • Integrated Multiple-Time Programmable (MTP) memory, capable of storing up to 1000 reconfigurable cycles.
    • I2C digital interface for real-time status monitoring, parameter configuration, and capacitor health testing.
    • Internal analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for monitoring input voltage, current, and power.
    • Compact QFN-25 (4mm x 4mm) package, ideal for space-constrained enterprise storage solutions.

Enhanced Energy Storage and Release Efficiency

MPS's patented energy storage and release management circuit minimizes the required storage capacitance, maximizing energy utilization during outages. The MP5516 supports configurable storage voltage (VSTRG) and buck release voltage (VBUCK_RLS) to cater to a wide range of SSD system architectures.

Applications of MP5516

  • Enterprise Solid-State Drives (SSDs): Ensuring consistent performance and data integrity.
  • Power Backup Solutions: Providing stable energy management during unexpected power loss.
