Torex Semiconductor Unveils Load Switch IC with Ideal Diode Function

Torex Semiconductor has launched new load switch IC products, the XC8114 series, which feature an ideal diode function. The XC8114 series is a load switch IC designed to operate within a voltage range of 1.5 V – 6 V and delivering a maximum output current of 3 A. It replicates the functionality of an ideal diode and integrates key features such as an enable (EN) pin, overcurrent limiting, inrush current limiting, and thermal shutdown protection.

This IC integrates an ideal diode function that achieves ultra-low loss equivalent to a diode forward voltage (VF) of just 20 mV. This is approximately 1/20th of the forward voltage typically found in Schottky barrier diodes used for reverse current protection, significantly extending battery life. Despite the VF being as low as 20 mV, the reverse current from VOUT to VIN remains at 0 μA, truly embodying the characteristics of an ideal diode. These features make it easy to implement output OR circuits and effectively reduce power consumption in backup battery applications.

The series uses constant current limiting and fold-back current limiting to manage overcurrent. The fold-back method limits short-circuit current to 60 mA, allowing for safe operation even in short-circuit conditions. The thermal shutdown function prevents IC damage due to overheating. These features enable the easy implementation of a reverse current prevention circuit with ultra-low loss and comprehensive protection functions. The device is also suitable for output OR-connection circuit configurations.

Furthermore, its 3 A output current capability makes it ideal for high-current applications such as USB power lines and various power supply interfaces. The XC8114 series is available in a compact, low-profile WLP-4-04 package (0.82 x 1.48 x 0.495 mm), making it ideal for space-constrained applications with limited board area or height restrictions.
