The MPF42792 from Monolithic Power Systems is a Battery Pack Fuel Gauge IC that has been designed to provide comprehensive status information on Lithium-ion battery strings stacking between 2 to 16 series cells. It requires an input voltage of 3 - 3.6 V. This battery management IC estimates the internal state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of each cell and pack (containing multiple cells). It also determines the remaining runtime, charge time, and instantaneous available power. This IC supports adaptive learning and can be enabled to refine initial charge/discharge settings and update the SOH of individual cells to track degradation. It connects to a host microcontroller to periodically update the input parameters of the fuel gauge and synchronize the input data to the execution time of the fuel gauge.
This battery pack IC supports a few basic configurations to set up and advanced configuration capabilities that can fine-tune the device for specific applications. It can achieve an accuracy of 3% when paired with an MP279x battery monitor. This IC includes I2C serial interfaces (up to 400 kHz) for standard, robust communication with external devices such as microcontrollers or analog front-ends (AFE). It is available in a surface-mount package that measures 4 x 4 mm and is ideal for light EVs: scooters, bikes, golf carts, energy storage, industrial robots, floor cleaners, and cordless equipment applications.
