The ISL88739A from Renesas is a Hybrid Battery Charger IC that is ideal for rechargeable 2, 3, or 4-cell battery applications. It can be configured to operate either as a hybrid power boost (HPB) charger or a narrow VDC (NVDC) charger, supporting all types from single cell to multi-cell batteries. This charger allows the battery to work with the adapter to supply power to the system load when the adapter capability is exceeded, thereby maintaining constant power supply. It uses N-channel MOSFETs for all the switches to achieve the best performance and lowest bill of materials (BOM) cost. This combo charger consists of an internal charge pump that is capable of quickly or slowly switching ON all the MOSFETs depending on the circumstance or the need. It prevents the system bus voltage to drop during quick turn ON mode when the battery is suddenly removed.
This Intel PROCHOT#-compliant charger IC is equipped with system low voltage, adapter over-current, battery over-current or over-heating functionalities to prevent short-circuit, over-temperature or other abnormal conditions. It also integrates an array of SMBus interface to remotely control the parameters for maximum flexibility. This RoHS-compliant IC is available in a surface-mount package that measures 4 x 4 mm.
