The ISL9237 from Renesas is a Buck-Boost Narrow Output Voltage DC (NVDC) Charger that is ideal for industrial and mobile device applications with integrated rechargeable batteries. It requires an input voltage of 3.2 - 23.4 V. This BMIC utilizes Intersil's advanced R3 technology that results in high light-load efficiency, fast transient response, and seamless DCM/CCM transitions for a wide range of mobile and industrial systems. It accepts input power from a wide range of DC power sources such as conventional AC/DC charger adapters, USB power delivery ports, and travel adapters to safely charge battery packs with up to 3 serially connected cells. The IC operates in reverse Buck mode when the on-the-go (OTG) function is enabled, thereby supplying 5 V to the USB port for 2- and 3-cell battery applications. It is capable of regulating the system output to a narrow DC range to ensure stable system bus voltage.
The buck-boost charger includes PSYS capabilities for Intel IMVP8-compliant systems, allowing it to deliver an analog signal that represents total platform power. It integrates SMBus or I2C interface that allows serial communication and programming of multiple critical parameters such as adapter current limit, charger current limit, system voltage setting, and trickle charging current limit, offering a customized solution. This RoHS-compliant BMIC is available in a surface-mount package that measures 4 x 4 mm.
