The STBC8 from STMicroelectronics is a Standalone Linear Li-ion Battery Charger IC that is ideal for cellular phones, PDAs, battery-powered devices, and Bluetooth applications. It requires an input voltage of 4.25 - 6.5 V and an input current of 150 µA. This charger consists of control logic, trickle charger block, P-channel MOSFETs, thermal regulator, logic gate, error amplifier, voltage reference, diode, resistors, current source, and protection circuitries. It uses the internal block to regulate the current when the junction temperature increases, thereby protecting the device when it operates under high power or high ambient temperature conditions. This battery charger uses the built-in USB port as the power supply voltage port to deliver the required amount of charge to external electronic devices. It enters the constant current mode when the battery voltage pin exceeds 2.9 V and when the voltage at this pin is closer to the final float voltage (4.2 V), the IC enters constant voltage mode, gradually reducing the charging current.
This battery charger IC enters the shutdown mode when the supply voltage drops below 30 mV of the battery pin voltage, causing the charging current to drop below 2 µA. It automatically terminates the charge cycle when the current flowing into the battery is 1/10th of the programmed value, avoiding the risk of overheating and damage. This IC includes a charge current monitor, under voltage lockout (UVLO), and automatic recharge capabilities to prevent false triggers or over-current-related damages. It is available in a surface-mount package that measures 3 x 3 mm.
