The KTZ8868 from Kinetic Technologies is an 8-channel LED Driver IC that delivers an optimal amount of power for LED backlighting and LCD biasing of medium-sized panels. It requires an input voltage of 2.7-5.5 V. This IC integrates an LED driver with 2 step-up converters for LED backlighting and an LCD bias power section with a step-up converter, LDO regulator, and an inverting charge pump in a single compact package, which results in a simpler and smaller solution with fewer external components. It supports a high switching frequency that allows the use of smaller inductors and capacitors. This LED driver has 2 step-up converters and each converter can drive 4 current sinks. It can control the brightness (or dimming operation) via an I2C interface or a pulse width modulation (PWM) mechanism to achieve a linear or exponential LED resolution of 11 bits. The PWM-based dimming mechanism offers a wide frequency range with a duty cycle to support the content adaptive brightness control (CABC) technique for additional flexibility.
This IC’s LCD bias power section generates dual outputs whose voltage levels can be programmed via an I2C interface. This LED driver also includes protection circuits such as inductor current limit protection, output short-circuit protection, output over-voltage protection, LED fault (open or short) protection, and thermal shutdown protection. It is available in a surface-mount package that measures 5 x 5 mm and is ideal for tablet backlighting and biasing applications.
