The A3992SLPTR-T from Allegro MicroSystems is a DMOS Dual Full-Bridge Micro-Stepping Motor Driver IC that has been designed for pulse width modulated (PWM) current control of bipolar micro-stepped stepper motors. It requires an input voltage of 15 - 50 V and provides an output current (continuous) of ±1.5 A. This driver consists of control logic, gate driver with integrated protection, serial interface, oscillators, DMOS full-bridge circuits, programmable timer, internal charge pump, voltage regulator, passive elements, and protection circuitries. It uses the serial ports with two 6-bit linear DACs to set the desired load current level (stepped in 1.56% increments), allowing maximum flexibility to control torque for a variety of step methods from micro-stepping to full step drives. This motor driver controls the fixed off-time PWM current control timing circuitry via the serial interface to operate in slow, fast, or mixed decay modes. It provides synchronous rectification at the DMOS output driver, thereby eliminating the need to use external clamp diodes and saving cost and component count.

This motor driver is equipped with short-to-ground, shorted load, thermal shutdown with hysteresis, and cross-over current protection circuitries to ensure better reliability when faced with faulty conditions. It is available in a surface-mount package (with exposed thermal pad requiring no electrical isolation) that measures 7.80 x 6.40 mm and is ideal for efficient motor control applications.
