The MP5402 from Monolithic Power Systems is a Frequency Selectable Stepdown Converter IC that is ideal for smart cigarette lighter adapter USB chargers and USB dedicated charging ports (DCP) applications. It requires an input voltage of 7-36 V. This PMIC monolithically integrates a step-down converter with two USB current-limit switches and a charging port identification circuit along with control logic, current sense, current sense amplifier, oscillator, bootstrap regulator, buck and power MOSFETs, PWM comparator, auto-detector, and protection circuits. It supports DCP schemes for the battery charging specification (BC1.2), divider mode, and 1.2 V/1.2 V mode, thereby eliminating the need for external user interaction.
This PMIC offers programmable line drop compensation and includes hiccup current limit, output over-voltage protection (OVP), under-voltage lock-out (UVLO), and thermal shutdown to prevent over-current or over-heating-related damages. It is available in a surface-mount package that measures 4 x 4 mm.
