Governments are increasingly supporting battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. The demand for lithium-ion batteries and their environmental and social impacts are crucial. Battery reuse and recycling practices could reduce these impacts, unlock new value streams, and reduce battery costs. However, as of 2022, these practices are limited and technical and economic uncertainties persist. This report analyzes the technological and economic feasibility of these practices and discusses key policies for a robust battery reuse and recycling industry.
