The PM8805 from STMicroelectronics is a Power-Over-Ethernet IC that is ideal for high power wireless data systems, PoE lighting systems, public information displays, security cameras, and accesss point applications. It requires an input voltage of up to 57 V and delivers an output power of less than 99.9 W. This IC consists of two active bridges with their driving circuitry, a charge pump to drive the high-side MOSFETs, a hot-swap MOSFET, and an IEEE 802.3bt-compliant interface. It performs physical layer classification and provides indication of the type of power sourcing equipment (PSE) (standard or legacy) used via a dedicated matrix of Tx signals. It can receive power either from an Ethernet cable or an external power source such as a wall adapter, with possible prevalence of the auxiliary source with respect to the power-over-ethernet (PoE).
This PoE IC is suitable to build the interface section of PoE switched mode power supplies (SMPSs) targeting the highest conversion efficiency. It also provides a power good (PG) signal that can be used to enable a PWM controller, a DC-DC converter, or an LED driver. This PoE supports thermal shutdown protection, two-step hot-swap current protection, and advanced energy-saving MPS timings, thereby ensuring high reliability and optimal performance. It is available in a surface-mount package that measures 8 x 8 x 1.0 mm.
